Here are 5 Inventors Killed by their Inventions
Henry Smolinksi
Died - 1973
Invention : Mizar (Flying Car)
Went to test flight the car along with another pilot when he got killed.
The right wing strut of the vehicle (Mizar) detached from the car during the flight.
Bad welds were said to be the cause of the crash.
Henry Winstanley
1644 - 1703
Invention : Eddystone Lighthouse
Having a great faith in his construction, he refused to leave the lighthouse during the Great Storm of 1703, It collapsed and was entirely destroyed.
He was making repairs on the lighthouse when the storm hits.
Otto Lilienthal
1848 - 1896
Invention : Glider
Known as the "Glider King", the first flight he did on August - 1896 were successful.
In the fourth try, he got struck by a gust of wind, his glider stalled during the flight. The maneuver failed and the subsequent 50ft fall broke his spine.
36 hours after the crash Lilienthal died, his last words were " Sacrifices must be made"
1823 - 1863
Invention : Submarine
A lawyer who had a thing for submarines, he built and designed 3 different models for the civil war.
When aboard for a routing training exercise, the vessel sank and he got killed.
The other 2 submarines he built also sank.
Franz Reichelt
1879 - 1912
Invention : Parachute Suit
An inventor who made a living as a tailor, he spent his time working on flying parachutes.
The first test was performed using dummies and was successful. When he test it himself, he jumped off the Eiffel Tower and the parachute didn't open.
The 187ft fall onto ground killed him instantly.
